What to Expect During LANAP for Periodontics

If you recently learned that you need periodontics treatment, you are not alone. According to the CDC, almost half of all adults in the United States currently live with a form of gum disease, which can cause systemic inflammation, tooth loss and bone loss. Fortunately, LANAP is a cutting-edge treatment that dentists use to stop the progression of gum disease and rid them of the infection. It also allows for more aesthetically pleasing results. 

Initial periodontics consultation for LANAP

Before initiating treatment, the dentist will perform an oral examination to see if the patient is eligible for LANAP. During the consultation, the patient will have the chance to ask questions, get an explanation about the treatment and discuss their fears. If required, the dentist may take digital X-rays of the patient’s mouth for a more accurate diagnosis and to ascertain the severity of the disease. For a more elaborate evaluation or if they suspect other problems, they may request a CT scan.

On the treatment day

When the patient returns to the office for LANAP, the dentist may give them a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Compared to traditional gum surgery, LANAP procedure is far less traumatic.

For the procedure, the dentist will use a soft tissue laser fiber (PerioLase) that is about three hairs thick. This will go between the gum and the teeth to remove bacteria and infected gum tissue. The laser operates at a specific wavelength that targets only infected tissue to ensure no damage to healthy tissues.

Afterward, the dentist will use an ultrasonic scaler and special hand tools to clean tartar from the tooth root surfaces. Finally, the laser will be used to clean the gum pocket thoroughly. By changing the settings, the dentist can form a stable blood clot to seal off the pocket and prevent re-entry of germs. As the gum heals, it will reattach to the tooth root.

During a session, the dentist will treat half the patient’s oral cavity, and most patients can drive back home afterward. The procedure can take as little as two 2 hour sessions. Patients can opt to have everything completed in a single treatment.  Most patients return to their routine the following day. Multiple surgery appointments are usually scheduled a week apart.

Recovery and follow-up care

Patients may experience mild aching, soreness and throbbing around the treated area for a few days, but they can use pain meds for relief. The tissue surrounding the teeth may look discolored and teeth alignment may feel slightly different, but that is only for a short while. Brushing and flossing are not possible for the first few days after treatment. It is advisable to stick with soft foods until the gum heals and to avoid smoking.
