Orthodontics Treatments from a Dentist

Orthodontics involves realigning the teeth and jaw to improve one's appearance and self-confidence. It can also improve dental health. Crooked teeth that do not line up correctly might make maintaining a hygienic oral routine more challenging. Cavities and gum disease are more likely to develop in the mouth as a result of dental misalignment.

Types of orthodontics treatments

Incorrectly aligned teeth are a common problem. For adults and children, the decision to wear braces is highly impactful. The dentist can recommend any one of these four orthodontic procedures to address a patient's issue.

Traditional braces

Since their development, traditional braces have undergone a series of improvements. Modern braces are thinner and lighter than their predecessors. These orthodontic appliances are made of stainless steel. The dentist will use a special cement to bond metal brackets to each tooth, and an archwire will connect the brackets. The teeth will gradually shift into place due to the applied pressure.

Ligatures, also known as O-rings, secure the arch wires to the metal brackets. These will be swapped out at each appointment for braces adjustment. There are brackets that require no O-rings, however. This option often comes with self-ligating braces.

Ceramic braces

When it comes to orthodontic treatment, many individuals would rather have ceramic braces than conventional metal braces due to their appearance. Ceramic braces can be as effective as metal ones. The brackets are made of clear porcelain that allows light to pass through them. This transparent material reduces the external visibility of the braces.

Discoloration of the elastics on these braces is a common complaint among patients, and teeth marking may occur as a result. To prevent tooth decay, the dentist may suggest regularly using a fluoride rinse.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners utilize various plastic trays that look and feel like sports mouth guards to straighten teeth gradually. The aligners are custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth.

Some patients choose aligners because they are removable, so patients can eat, drink, or clean their teeth and gums. Every two weeks, the patient will return to the dentist’s office to get a fresh set of aligners, which will eventually bring the teeth to the desired positions. Depending on the extent of misalignment, the straightening process might take between six months and one year.

Palatal expanders

There are two ways to address the problem of overcrowded teeth: extraction and palatal expansion. The dentist may recommend a palatal expander as an alternative to tooth extractions. The appliance is custom-made to suit the patient's palate and exerts force on the area behind the upper teeth. This device gradually moves the teeth. By widening the palate, the dentist will have more room to work with in repositioning the patient's teeth using devices like aligners or braces.

Enhance your smile with orthodontics treatment

You can straighten your teeth if they are crowded or misaligned. The dentist can help you get started with orthodontics treatment, whether you choose metal braces, ceramic braces, or clear aligners. Consult a dentist for advice on the best method.
