Common Applications of LANAP in Periodontics

Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is one of the latest procedures in periodontics. It uses a PerioLase Nd:YAG laser designed specifically for treating gum tissues. LANAP is a patient-friendly and minimally invasive procedure with significant improvements over traditional gum surgery.

How LANAP works

LANAP is an FDA-patented protocol that can only be done with a PerioLase laser. The PerioLase uses digitally controlled pulse durations to produce an accurate amount of energy for treatment. This laser is the only FDA-approved laser for bone and tissue regeneration. The following are a few applications of LANAP in periodontics.

Periodontal disease

LANAP can offer patients with periodontal diseases a regenerative treatment option that is more cosmetic, more aesthetically appealing, more cost-effective and less invasive, with results that can match conventional bone grafting and guided bone regeneration. Regarding cosmetics, LANAP helps preserve most of the gum tissues supporting the teeth, unlike other treatments that require traditional flap access.

During the regular method of treating advanced periodontal disease, the dentist uses scalpels to remove infected gum tissues to access infected pockets in the bone or gums for surgical removal. Afterward, the dentist will use sutures to reshape the gums surrounding the teeth without the pockets. The procedure is generally an effective procedure but is more invasive and often causes pain and discomfort.

LANAP, on the other hand, removes infected gum tissues using an accurate light frequency. The PerioLase wavelength can distinguish between healthy and diseased tissues. The laser destroys any existing bacteria in the mouth, which promotes new tissue growth. The removal of infected tissues and regeneration of healthy new tissue can occur with minimal trauma to the gums.

Treat loose tooth

Generally, there are few options for treating a loose tooth. Dentists used to recommend tooth extraction surgery, which can be painful and invasive. With LANAP, patients now have an alternative.

The LANAP protocol is noninvasive, meaning that no tissue or teeth will be affected by the procedure. Using the PerioLase, the dentist can kill the bacteria and infection in the gums and stimulate a natural healing process. With the decrease in harmful bacteria and cell stimulation, the bone and gum structure can start to regenerate around the loose tooth.

Implant disease

Implants do not become infected, but the tissue surrounding the implants can be. In the same way that gum disease starts with minor inflammation that worsens without treatment, peri-implantitis disease begins as peri-mucositis (inflammation around the implant). If neglected, the bone around the implant can break down and the implant may loosen. The initial inflammation is often caused by bacteria or foreign materials.

LANAP is a practical treatment method for failing implants or peri-implantitis because it treats the infection of the bone and gum. With the laser, the dentist can adjust the settings and light exposure to stabilize the implants while eliminating periodontal pathogens and endotoxins.

Final note

The use of LANAP in periodontics is backed by scientific research and approved by the FDA. If you are considering laser treatment for your condition, contact a cosmetic dentist to learn more about the procedure.
